Derek Nievergelt is a well renowned touring and session bass player who has worked with the likes of Coldplay, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Cassandra Wilson, Diane Reeves, Fred Wesley, Keb’ Mo, Clark Terry, and Terrence Blanchard. He has studied under jazz luminaries Ron Carter and Ray Brown and attended the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the New England Conservatory. As an educator and musician, he continues to travel with The Monk Institute throughout the USA working with High School band programs raising awareness among students about the connection between hip hop, jazz and blues. Along with his skill as a bassist, Nievergelt possesses a formidable songwriting talent.
He has written songs that have been recorded and performed by soul sensation Sharon Jones and the Dapkings, jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and The Benny Lackner Trio. Other notable artists Nievergelt has worked with include Chris Thomas King, Joe Louis Walker, Doug Wamble, Greg Osby, Cormega, Somi, Pyeng Theradgill, Tre Williams and The Revelations, John Shannon, Stanley Jordan, and the Nublu orchestra conducted by Butch Morris. He can be heard on the film score of Spike Lee’s Bamboozled as well as a host of other movies and television and radio commercials.
