Jovol Bell is a native of the city of Angleton in the “big” state of Texas. This young, fresh, soulful, and unique drummer has a sound that is just as big as the state he hails from. Jovol started playing drums at the age of 5 in church. His formal study of music and introduction to Jazz began at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas at age 18 in 1998 under the leadership of Professor Richard Birk. Birk saw that Jovol possessed a unique talent and took a special interest in him and motivated him to go full steam. Jovol went on to continue his Jazz studies with a full scholarship at Texas Southern University, (TSU) in Houston, Texas. He was awarded a citation for Outstanding Musicianship from the prestigious International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) in 2002.
Bell then moved on to Berklee College of Music in Boston and graduated with honors. Jovol’s playing reflects the history of drumming along with the artistry of all music from Gospel to Jazz to Salsa. His infectious fusion of hip-hop & jazz, produces a unique old-school feel with a new-school sound for both yesterday’s and today’s listeners alike.
Currently Jovol A.K.A “Bam Bam” has his own band “Reality” and is working on a record project to be released next spring. He has also played with Stanley Clarke, Greg Howe, Joe Sample and Kim Burrell. Jovol Bell endorses Page drums, Sabian Cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, Evans Drum heads, Rim Riser, Kickport and HansenFutz.
