Natalie John is one of the finest young talents to emerge in recent years in the highly competitive and world class New York Jazz scene. A native of Marin County, California, Natalie was classically trained at a very young age. She was soon drawn towards Jazz and joined the music program at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where studied with such luminaries as Russ Ferrante, Shelly Berg, Alan Pasqua, Bill Watrous and others.Natalie was awarded the prestigious John Coltrane Foundation Scholarship. While at USC, Natalie also won another prestigious award – the 2006 Downbeat Award for Best college vocalist. She moved to New York to pursue her Master’s degree from the highly regarded New School University studying with Reggie Workman, Joe Chambers and others.
She participated at the Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Artist residency at the Kennedy Center in Washington and in the same year in 2008, she attended the prestigious Banff international program for Jazz and Creative music under the direction of Dave Douglas. While at Banff, she also studied with Prasanna who was guitar faculty
She has performed with Ingrid Jenson, Rachel Z, Prasanna, Bjorkestra and many others. She also composes, performs and arranges for several diverse New York city groups including KT Chauvot’s 8 piece ensemble Collective Pursuit, the Marty Isenberg Big Band, Travis Sullivan’s Identity Crisis etc. The Natalie John quartet was prominently featured in the 2005 Festival Jazz en Lima in Peru where she shared the bill with Maria Schneider, Geoff Keezer and other international Jazz greats. Natalie performs regularly in several top jazz clubs in New York and other cities across America.
