ZDENEK KANSKY (CZECH REPUBLIC)

Zdenek (Z.K) is a native of Czech Republic. His early exposure to music began when his grandfather’s accordion playing inspired him to take lessons at the age of seven. When he was sixteen he picked up his first bass guitar. Later on when he was more involved to jazz, he felt needs to start to play also upright bass. It allowed him to play all kinds of jazz and also appreciation of classical music.

Zdenek studied bass and music education at the Conservatory of J. Jezek in Prague. After preforming at many jazz club and festivals in Czech Rep and Europe he consistently felt to go to USA where many of his favorite musicians have lived. In 1997, after attending a summer jazz workshop hosted by the Berklee College of Music in the Czech Republic, Zdenek was awarded a huge music scholarship and was invited to study at Berklee. During Berklee time Zdenek performed with top students and faculty players (Joe Lovano, Danilo Perez and others). After graduation Bob Stoloff offered to Z.K position as a bass accompanist for different classes.

After Berklee Z.K together with his wife Christie left Boston to tour on different cruise ships to play in 9-piece band for hundreds of shows (Broadways and different singers comedians and more). After these contracts Z.K played two years with one of the top Big Band in Czech Republic and toured around Europe with his own international band World Jazz group. Z.K moved back to USA in 2010. Since then Z.K recorded his CD: “Dreams & Hopes” and has performed with many world-class musicians: Luis Perdomo. Marcus Strickland, Jonathan Blake, Alex Norris, Yoron Israel, Harold Mabern, and many other great musicians.

In 2012 Z.K was accepted to Master studies at one of the oldest Jazz school in USA William Paterson University. Z.K received graduate assistantship (full scholarship plus monthly stipendium). During Master Studies Z.K had a chance to study with one of top American Arranger for Big band Jim McNeely. Zdenek performed at Jazz Lincoln Center in New York and his arrangement for sax player Rich Perry was there performed with Big Band.

After receiving the Master of the music from WPU, Z.K and his wife founded their own ZCK Music Production. They run their own Music school, produce music, organizing concerts and hiring different musicians for many performances. Zdenek currently lead his own group Z.K Trio or Quartet and ZCK quartet with his wife Christie (vocal & piano).  Currently Z.K is preparing new material for his CD from trio to Big band format with original music. In addition to active music life in USA Zdenek has a big respect to Indian classical music and enjoys the fusion of Western and Indian music. Zdenek’s first trip to India was in 2017 as the music faculty at GMI in New Delhi area. Z.K there  regularly performed at the Piano Man Jazz club. He is feeling that India needs more upright jazz bass players and what we bass players call “ doublers”( be able to play well  both upright& electric). One of Zdenek’s wishes is to bring to SAM us much possible passion musicians who wish to study upright & electric bass and(or) composition and improvisation and share his music knowledge from Western music and to learn more about Indian music culture and life.
